What was a defining moment in your career that shaped who you are as a leader?
One defining moment for me was assuming more leadership in my family business with over a century of history and knowing that respect is not inherited – it is earned by working hard every day alongside our team. Being part of a family-owned company can come with many assumptions, so I had to be very intentional about asking questions and listening first and foremost. Then learning the operation from the inside out and demonstrating my commitment to the business through hard work and rolling up my sleeves. That experience shaped my leadership style of being hands-on, respecting the hard work and commitment of our employees, and carrying on our traditions while being open-minded to change.
What’s one barrier you’ve faced as a woman in this industry?
While the beer industry has historically been male-dominated, I’ve always attempted to show up as a leader and demonstrate confidence regardless of being one of the few, if any, women in the room. I’ve tried to build credibility through preparation, consistency, and gaining a comprehensive understanding of our business. I spent time learning about everything from sales, working with our distributor partners and retailers, to marketing, internal administration, and brewery operations so that I could build a strong foundation of knowledge. That’s allowed me to bring greater perspective to the table when navigating decisions.
If you could give one piece of advice to the next generation of women entering this business, what would it be?
My advice to anybody starting a career in this industry is to first take the time to listen and learn. Don’t have your eye already focused on what’s next. Credibility takes time to build, so put in the effort. You’ll discover your own style and gain the confidence to not feel like you have to lead like someone else. You do not have to fit a mold to be effective, and in this industry, you do not need to lead like others to gain respect. Don’t be afraid to ask for opportunities before you think you’re ready. And surround yourself with people you trust, and more importantly, with those who aren’t afraid to challenge you and support your growth. Your voice has value, and business performance can be stronger when fresh voices are heard.
