Women Making Moves in the Bev-Alc Industry

An Interview with Mei Lim, Owner of Beer Park

Can you share a bit about your journey in the industry?

My parents have been working in the beer industry for over 15 years, a journey that has influenced my own path. Witnessing their business flourish, the relationships they’ve built, and their numerous achievements have been a significant inspiration for me. I was about to begin my freshman year of high school when all this began. Fast forward 12 years… I have established my own successful little empire. I take immense pride in my progress and the connections I have formed along the way.

Have you had any mentors throughout your journey?

Throughout my journey, I’ve been fortunate to have several mentors who have significantly influenced my path. I already mentioned my parents, but they are the ones who definitely paved the path for me to find my way in the beer industry and they showed me how to run a successful business.

Keeping it within the family, my brother and sister-in-law were the original owners of Beer Park. When they decided to pursue other opportunities, they entrusted their thriving business to me. Their mentorship throughout this transition helped immensely in my development and success.

Additionally, the managers I’ve encountered in the industry have played a crucial role in my growth. Their insights and teachings have deepened my understanding of the business, further shaping my journey.

Have there been any challenges you’ve faced as a woman in the industry?

I wouldn’t say there have been any challenges I’ve faced because of my gender. Everyone in the industry has been so understanding, kind, and friendly.

What trends are you excited about in beer?

The most exciting trends in beer for me are the seasonal brews and limited releases. Another trend I love seeing is the collaborations the industry has with sports teams.

Did you ever feel that you had to prove yourself as a woman in the industry?

As a woman, I feel that I have to constantly have to prove myself in everything I do, not just in this industry. That being said, it’s nothing I take offense to. For me, it’s more motivation to keep a strong front and prove my worth in the industry and in all that I do.

What advice would you give other women looking to get into the industry?

Don’t be intimidated! Obstacles are meant to be overcome, not overlooked! You don’t need to prove anything to anyone else. You are your biggest critic. Look past it, and you can accomplish anything!

What’s one thing people might not know about your role in the industry?

My partner is the muscle behind the business. He handles all the heavy lifting, machinery, etc., but what many might not know is that behind the scenes when “muscle man” is out or not feeling well, I have to step in. While moving pallets of beer by hand isn’t the most glamorous part of this business, it has to be done one way or another. In my mind it’s a gym day and a workday!

If you could share a beer with any woman in history, who would it be and why?

I’d have to say Princess Diana. She touched so many people in her short life and continues to even after her death. She truly is an icon. Her compassion, sense of style/fashion, and her role as a mother are just some examples of what makes her extraordinary
