Behind the Scenes, Ahead of the Game

Women Making Moves in the Bev-Alc Industry

An interview with Alissa (Ali) Marino, Lead Account Specialist at Origlio Beverage

What inspired you to pursue a career in the beverage industry?

It has been a part of my life since I was 16. That’s when I started waitressing, and later bartending. I was always drawn to the fast-paced, social atmosphere and it quickly became something I loved. As I got older and became a mother, transitioning into wholesale distribution felt like the right, more stable choice – and I haven’t looked back since!

Can you share a moment in your career that made you especially proud?

I’m especially proud of helping with the transition of Buck, Bond, and Northeast Distributors in Maryland. These companies have operated with different processes that are very different than ours for years, so helping them adapt to a new system was both challenging and rewarding. What stood out most to me was the overwhelmingly positive attitude of everyone involved. Their willingness to embrace change was very encouraging, and now, over a year later, it’s incredible to hear how much smoother and more efficient their operations have become.

Have you seen a shift in opportunities for women in this space over the years?

Yes, definitely! One of the most exciting changes has been the incorporation of female delivery drivers. When I first started at Origlio, there weren’t any women in that position, but now, for the first time that I’m aware of, Origlio has two full-time female drivers – who are rockstars!

It’s inspiring to see women step into these roles and thrive. It proves that there’s a place for women in every aspect of the beverage industry and it serves as a great reminder that the industry is constantly evolving, with more doors opening for women every day.

What advice would you give to women looking to enter the industry?

My advice would be to own your knowledge and value, regardless of whether you feel like you check every box on paper. This industry thrives on hard work, relationship-building, and determination. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, speak up, and take up space – you belong here!

Is there a woman in the industry who has inspired or mentored you?

Yes! My manager, Sue Gold, has been a huge source of inspiration to me. She has worked her way up to her position after years of hard work, and watching her lead with both compassion and efficiency has had a profound impact on me. She’s shown me that strong leadership is about being adaptable, staying proactive, and most importantly, supporting your team.

What’s one beverage category (beer, FMBs, N/A drinks, etc.) you think deserves more attention?

Although the segment is growing, I think non-alcoholic beverages deserve some more attention. There’s been a shift in how people approach drinking. There is more of a focus on balance and wellness, and the quality of NA options have improved so much. White Claw 0% Non-Alc is a good example. It’s a really tasty drink that has nearly half the electrolytes you would get from a normal sports drink with only 15 calories.

If you could have a drink with any woman from history, who would it be and why?

If I could have a drink with any woman from history, it would be Amelia Earhart. She was a woman ahead of her time, doing things that were unheard of. I’d love to know what motivated her to keep pushing forward, even when people doubted her. Her adventurous spirit and determination are so inspiring. I think it would be incredible to hear about her experiences and about how she was able to stay so confident and focused despite all the challenges she faced.
