Behind the Bar & Beyond: A Woman Shaping Beer Culture

Women Making Moves in our Industry

An interview with Jennifer Chiartas, Bartender & Front of House Manager at J.T. Bankers

Can you share a bit about your journey in the industry?

I started in the industry when I was 18 years old, 25 years ago. My first job was at an Italian restaurant. I didn’t know a thing about beer. Luckily, I was trained very well. Back then there weren’t many options for craft beer, so I feel as though I was able to learn as the industry grew.

Have you had any mentors throughout your journey? In the future, would you ever want to be a mentor?

I wouldn’t say I had a mentor, but when I first started out in the industry, I asked everyone a lot of questions. I would love to mentor women in the industry to help them gain confidence.

Have there been any challenges you’ve faced as a woman in the industry?

Absolutely. There have been many challenges for me. The main challenge, and I still deal with it, is males questioning me about the taste profiles and makeup of the beers we have on draft or in bottles. Part of my job is knowing what every beer I bring in tastes like, the hops that are used, etc.

Do you feel that you have the respect of men in the industry?

I have the respect of my male sales reps for sure. They never question me. In fact, they appreciate my knowledge of running the bar the way I do.

What trends are you excited about in beer?

I LOVE Hazy IPAs. But I’m excited to see what new West Coasts IPAs come out. I’m also a huge fan of stouts and porters. In the past few years, numerous breweries have come out with some phenomenal ones. I love that breweries are branching out and listening to what the consumers want.

Did you ever feel that you had to prove yourself as a woman in the industry?

Not really. The owner that I have worked for, for the past 12 years, is a female. Proving myself to her was my own personal goal.

What advice would you give to women looking to get into the industry?

My first piece of advice would be to find a job where the owner treats their employees well and wants them to succeed. Second, be confident!!! It’s hard enough for women to be looked at in a professional way in this industry – we need to OWN the fact that we can do ANYTHING.

Is there a woman in the industry (or outside of it) who has inspired you?

I would say my current boss is my biggest inspiration. She started her business 28 years ago, and has not only gained the respect from reps, but the community as well. She truly is the hardest working and successful woman I know.
