www.millercoors.com MillerCoors grew from the dreams of two German entrepreneurs who came to America in the mid-19th century. In 1855 Frederick J. Miller, brought his passion for beer to the United States and settled in Milwaukee, WI. Shortly after his transition he bought the Plank Road Brewery and made his first beer using yeast he had carried all the way from Europe. Adolph Coors was born in Prussia and apprenticed at a brewery as a young teen. With his characteristic spirit, he stowed away on a ship to get to America to bring his brewing dream to life. In 1873 he tapped his first barrel for Coors Brewing at The Golden Brewery in Colorado. Both companies had the good fortune to have family members carry on the work and legacy of the founders. Many businesses did not survive Prohibition and two world wars, however, these founding companies built their success barrel by barrel. At MillerCoors there are two wonderful traditions that joined in 2008 to form one promising company.
Blue Moon Brewing Co. began brewing their first beers in 1995 at the sandlot in Denver, Colorado. The goal was to create uniquely flavored, highly drinkable, handcrafted beers. Well, it didn’t take long to strike gold! One of their first creations, Blue Moon Belgian White, made an immediate splash at the World Beer Championship, three years in a row! More than a decade later, word began to get around. But otherwise, not much has changed, still just a bunch of friends having fun making great beer. What’s not to love about that?

This young and hungry entrepreneur brewed uncomplicated beer and used an easy-going approach to win over drinkers. Today, his legacy continues, giving drinkers everywhere an approachable craft beer they can own.
In 1838, a momentous event in Plzen saw 36 barrels of bad beer smashed and emptied into the street. Around 250 burghers had brewing rights in the city but poor quality beer combined with some tavern owners having higher prices than others (meaning the beer sold slower and turned sour), and the threat of cheaper imported beers replacing their own brews.
Something had to be done and a committee of important townsfolk decided that the answer was to build one new brewery to be run by the city. In January 1839, a plan was agreed upon and work started to build this new brewery.
A young architect named Martin Stelzer was enlisted to build the Burgher’s Brewery, a forerunner to the present day brewing company. A visionary Bavarian brewmaster, Josef Groll, was hired to make the beer and he combined new techniques to produce pale malted barley, he used local Czech hops, he took the soft water of Plzen, and chose a lager yeast. A new beer was born.
The first batch of beer was brewed on 5th October 1842. Five weeks later, on 11th November, the beer was first drunk in the town. A golden beer – the world’s first golden lager – it was fresh, clear and refreshing with a hint of caramel sweetness and a fragrant, balanced hop bitterness. It was an immediate success and a proud moment for the city of Plzen. Since that day the recipe has remained the same.
