Brewery Van Steenberg

www.vansteenberg.com

Brewery Van Steenberge is an independent, small Belgian family brewery located in Ertvelde, 15 miles north of Gent on the border of The Netherlands. The brewery has been in the same family since at least 1784 and produces 40,000 barrels annually, mostly high end specialty beers such as Piraat and Gulden Draak.

Augustijn Ale

ABV: 8%

Win It Too Inc.

This Abbey ale has a full body, staying head and an amber color with a spicy, malty palate that finishes very fruity with complex hoppy undertones. It is full and balanced, slightly fruity with a marvelous aroma.  Extremely pleasant to drink during lenghty conversations. Brewed according to a 700 year old tradition, Augustijn goes very well with spicy food. The fiery flavors of Cajun, Mexican and Oriental cuisines are  pleasantly cooled down by this wonderful beer. The hops also help the digestion. It is also tasty with delicious cheeses. You can age the Augustijn for many years, just like wine.

Gulden Draak (Golden Dragon)

ABV: 10.5%

Win It Too Inc.

Gulden Draak is a dark brown Triple ale, which makes it an exception among the Belgian Triples. The second fermentation offers the nice creamy head, the full body and all the vitamins of the centuries old brewers yeast. It is a "thick" beer that you can actually "nimble" to explore the complex taste. Gulden Draak balances a natural malt toffee-like sweetness with some hoppy accents. The aroma is round and sweet. You sip and enjoy this beer slowly, probably as a dessert, or as a treat you definitely deserve. Some like it with a bold cigar, others match it with chocolate.

Piraat

ABV: 10.5%

Win It Too Inc.

A wickedly rich and rounded brew that packs a mighty punch. The powerful glow builds up from inside. Deep golden with a subtle haze with lots of hops and malt. A mild sweetness, reminiscent of bread dough, spices and tropical fruits.  Piraat tastes great with fish and meat and is often appreciated as an after dinner beer and cigar lovers claim there is no better beer to enjoy with a cigar. An excellent way to prepare for a good night sleep. This is a relaxing brew.

Monk’s CafÉ Sour Ale

ABV: 5.5%

Win It Too Inc.

The first beer ever to bear the name Monk's Cafe, a famous Philadelphia beer bar. This is a traditional Belgian sour ale produced exclusively for Monk's. The Van Steenberge brewery bottled its famous ‘BIOS - Vlaamse Bourgogne’ under private label for Monk’s. The Flemish Burgundy of the Van Steenberge brewery is an old brown style, aged in oak, and is one of the oldest brews made by the brewery, at least brewed for over 300 years. It is produced with mixed fermentation (top and spontaneous) and aged in oak barrels to develop a refreshing flavor and classic piquancythe beer.  This is only brewed once a year.

Brouwerij Bavik

www.bavik.be

Brouwerij Bavik is one of the oldest breweries in Belgium, built in 1894.  It is owned by the fourth generation of the De Brabandere family, who were originally farmers. They still display in their guest bar the original application to the town council for permission to build the brewery. The brewery is best known for its Petrus Oud Bruin, a competitor to the famous Rodenbach, and its impressive Wittekerke wheat beer.

Bavik Pilsner

ABV: 5%

Win It Too Inc.

This pilsner is very light, hardly any effervescence with a fine white head. The bitterness is first introduced in the aroma and comes completely forward in the aftertaste.

Petrus Aged Pale

ABV: 7.3%

Win It Too Inc.

Petrus Aged Pale was developed from Petrus Oud Bruin. It is blended from two specially made pale beers and one dark, the latter aged for 20-24 months in wood. This oakiness adds a hint of fresh, fragrant smokiness that is evident in both the aroma and palate of Aged Pale. So is the dryish nuttiness, which then yields to passion fruit, pears and green apple. This pale ale is complex with tightly combined flavors and a sourness in the finish. Try this brew with smoked, pickled or marinated fish (trout, herrings, sardines) shellfish or squid.

Wittekerke White

ABV: 5%

Win It Too Inc.

The last Belgian wit beer to use a small amount of oats in its brew and it is the fruitiest version of the style with recognizable hints of lemon. Wittekerke charms you with its own character, smooth taste and unique, delicious aroma. A very pleasant drink that is light in alcohol with a crisp and refreshing flavor. Wittekerke is always served cold, but in taking your time to enjoy it, you will find more flowery and spring flavors towards the end of your glass. Although the hoppy bitterness is an underlying taste, it is never dominant. It is very refreshing and has a thick white head. This refreshing light beer is mostly consumed with snacks at receptions and parties or just as an excellent thirst quencher any time of the day. Wittekerke is the right choice with a very spicy Carpaccio, white fish, scallops or a fresh salad. An omelet will also make a good combination.

Brouwerij De Halve Maan

www.halvemaan.be

Situated in the middle of the very busy tourist center of Brugge (Bruges), between the Beguinage and the Cathedral, this brewery is also a restaurant. You could call it a brew pub with international exposure and centuries of tradition. Indeed, the first time brewery was mentioned on paper was in 1546, a time when Brugge housed over 30 breweries.

The document states the split of the premises of Brewery De Maan (Moon), and thus the brewery acquired the name Half Moon. In the 16th Century Brugge had lost most of its dominance in the Low Lands and the religious wars brought on by the Spanish army, were chasing half of the Flemish population to the North. No wonder, then, that the brewery had to downsize. The actual family of today’s brewers bought the brewery in 1856. Xavier Vanneste is the sixth generation at the helm of the brewery. The focus of the brewery is the Brugse Zot beer, launched in June 2005, after an extensive taste-testing and fine tuning during a year where people from all over the world--millions of tourists--were invited to rate the beer.

Brugse Zot

ABV: 6%

Win It Too Inc.

This pale blond ale, crowned with a white head, blooms with a fruity pronounced aroma and hints of lemon. It hits the palate with a refreshing dryness, embellished by hints of spices and orange, balanced by an underlying faint malty sweetness. This is one of the lighter pale golden ales with an alcohol content of 6 %. The beer finishes with a short, fruity taste that somewhat sticks to the palate. It pairs well with most dishes where it brings refreshment and cleansing of the palate. The fruity dryness and the relatively low alcohol content make it a great refreshing beer to drink with company during pleasant times, or moments of extreme fun. Because of the more conservative use of hops, and thus the lack of an outspoken bitterness, this beer is very well suited to use in the preparation of food and desserts. Sabayons is a given, but also many sauces will be highly enhanced with this beer.

Brouwerij Van Eecke

www.globalbeer.com

This independent family brewery traces its origins back to 1629, when, for the first time, a document mentioned the local castle was adjacent to a brewery. Indeed, at that time, the noble family living in the castle secured the right to call themselves the "Earls of Watou".

During the French Revolution the plundering French troops burned the castle and the brewery. The noble family escaped the guillotine by running off to England. Only the brewery was rebuilt by a local farmer in the same year of the destruction, under the slogan "Revolt all you want, but we still need beer here." Through marriage the Van Eecke family became the masters of the brewery in 1862, where they brewed top fermenting country ales. The brewery had only a local significance until well after WW II. With the revival of the authentic local ales in combination with TV and modern marketing in the 1960's, the beautiful delicious beers of the brewery became a hot commodity in bars and fine restaurants all around Belgium and Northern France wordplay at the same time.

Poperings Hommelbier

ABV: 7.5%

Win It Too Inc.

Hommel is the local abbreviation of humulus in the region around Poperinge, Belgium, derived from the botanical name for the hop plant. Brouwerij Van Eeke's Poperings Hommelbier is a hoppy, golden ale which is brewed with a blend of seasonal aromatic pale malts.  This beer is markedly refreshing.

Troubadour Blond

ABV: 6.5%

Win It Too Inc.

Troubadour Blond first strikes you with its clear, golden, attractive color. A firm white head is the crown of this golden ale. Your first experience, while sipping the Blond, will be a refreshing, sparkling effect on your tongue, followed by a mild bitterness enhanced by a spiciness, that finishes with a sweeter sensation. With its 6.5 % alcohol by volume it is somewhat stronger in alcohol content than regular beers, but it’s not overpowering, and it allows one to easily drink more than one glass--especially with dinner. It pairs especially well with fish dishes.

Troubadour Obscura

ABV: 8.5%

Win It Too Inc.

Obscura is fairly dark in color, as you would expect from a stout.  However, slightly more reddish-brown than Irish stouts. It pours with a dense, rich, creamy beige head that crowns the glass. Thanks to the re-fermentation in the bottle, you will notice the natural carbonation. The flavors are deep, rich and pronounced, malty and clearly roasted. It is a bit deceptive because the relatively high alcohol content is not immediately felt.  Obscura has a complex aftertaste, with some licorice undertones and a pleasant bitterness survives last.  This is absolutely a beer to savor and enjoy—let you taste buds experience every ounce of flavor.  The pronounced taste of Obscura makes it an ideal match for dishes with strong tasting sauces. Let it fight, let it compensate. Some will enjoy this beer as their last beer of the day, or as dessert.  This beer clearly reminds you of the Good Life.

Troubador Magma

ABV: 9%

Win It Too Inc.

Troubador Magma is a Tripel IPA that combines the hop bitterness of an American IPA with the fruity characteristics of a Belgian Tripel. Magma pours a hazy orange sunburst color worthy of its name, with a dense white head to top it all off and thick lacing down the sides of the glass. On the nose, there is a sugary sweetness accompanied by a bountiful floral hop aroma.
