Sierra Nevada
Sierra Nevada has a proud history as one of the pioneers of the craft brewing. Critics proclaim these beers as “among the best brewed anywhere in the world.” The Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. was established in 1979 by homebrewers, Ken Grossman and co-founder, Paul Camusi. In 1976 Ken opened a “home brew shop” and two years later Ken and Paul created a first-rate microbrewery. The ingredients were premium, including huge amounts of hops that would become the brewery’s trademark. Ken, an avid back packer, named the brewery after his favorite hiking grounds-the Sierra Mountains. In 1980, the Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. brewed the first batch of what was to become a landmark in American craft brewing-Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. The Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is now the 10th largest brewing company in the U.S. and it is extremely dedicated to operating the brewery in the most environmentally sustainable and eco-friendly manner possible.
SIERRA NEVADA PALE ALEABV: 5.6% |
Pale Ale is a delightful example of the classic pale ale style. It has a deep amber color and an exceptionally full-bodied, complex character. The fragrant bouquet and spicy flavor are the result of the generous use of the best cascade hops. While we think Pale Ale tastes great with everything, its assertive hop flavor goes especially well with spicy cuisine, since its clean flavors counterbalance the richness of many hot dishes. It also goes well with starters and salads and its spicy complexity stimulates both appetites and conversation. Available year round. |
SIERRA NEVADA SUMMERFESTABV: 5.0% |
A pilsner-style lager whose incredible smoothness comes from an extra-long lagering period, Summerfest is lighter in body than other ales but just as complex in character. Summerfest quenches your thirst with big aroma and a tangy hop bite. While Summerfest is complex enough to accompany any gourmet meal, it is also great at barbecues, picnics, or any time you want a smooth, refreshing beer. Assertive enough to stand up to spicy meats and sauces, its tangy hoppiness also goes well with the sharp, peppery bite of specialty mixed salad greens. Available in April. |
Sierra Nevada Tumbler Autumn Brown AleABV: 5.5% |
As the nights grow cool, the leaves on the valley oaks begin to turn and fall. In honor of this yearly dance, Sierra Nevada brings you Tumbler Autumn Brown Ale and invites you to enjoy the show. They use malt within days of roasting at the peak of its flavor to give Tumbler a gracefully smooth malt character. Pour a glass and grab a window seat to watch the leaves come tumbling down. Available in the fall. |
SIERRA NEVADA CELEBRATION ALEABV: 6.8% |
The long, cold nights of winter are a little brighter with Celebration Ale. Wonderfully robust and rich, Celebration Ale is dry-hopped for a lively, intense aroma. Brewed especially for the holidays, it is perfect for a festive gathering or a quiet evening at home. With an ale as big as Celebration, you need a dish assertive enough to hold its own. Rich meats such as prime rib, lamb, or wild fowl underscore Celebration’s huge aroma, making a wonderful holiday meal. Intense, earthy pastas also work well—try goat cheese ravioli, a rich fettuccine, or gnocchi with Gorgonzola cheese sauce. Available in October. |
Sierra Nevada Ruthless Rye IPAABV: 6.6% |
Rye has been a staple grain for millennia, favored by brewers and distillers for its unique peppery aroma and robust and rustic flavor. In short, rye is the perfect foil for intense whole-cone American hops. Ruthless Rye IPA is a deep red-amber color with strong aromas of citrus and tropical fruit, melded with the rustic spiciness of rye. The beer is robust and rowdy, but retains balance between the grains and the bold hop presence. Rustic grains for a refined flavor—Ruthless Rye IPA is the perfect beer for the tumultuous transition to spring. |
SIERRA NEVADA BIGFOOT ALEABV: 9.6% |
An award winning example of the English Barleywine ale style, Bigfoot Ale has an extremely rich and intense bitter-sweet palate, a dense and fruity bouquet and a deep reddish-brown color. This is an exceedingly complex, full-bodied ale. Intense, malty, and bittersweet, Bigfoot is wonderful served with dessert. Aromatic notes from the dry-hopping process pair well with chocolate mousse and raspberries or a good-quality cheesecake. If you prefer a more savory taste, try an assortment of sharp aged cheeses, served with fresh fruits like apples, pears, and grapes, which will offer a contrast that will bring all of the flavors together. Limited Release. |
SIERRA NEVADA PORTERABV: 5.6% |
Dark and rich, Sierra Nevada Porter is a delicious, medium-bodied ale with a creamy head. The Porter’s smooth flavor (malty with hints of caramel) comes from a blend of deep-roasted barley malts. While porters are traditionally paired with steak (think Porterhouse), its deep maltiness is an equally perfect match for the rich, smoky flavors of grilled portobello mushrooms. The creaminess of Porter’s chocolate and caramel malts also makes it a perfect accompaniment to desserts, especially those made with chocolate. |
SIERRA NEVADA STOUTABV: 5.8% |
Creamy, malty, and full-bodied, Sierra Nevada Stout is satisfyingly rich. Caramel and black malts give the stout its deep, dark color and pronounced roasted flavor. Black malts give Stout a smokiness that demands an equally intense flavor pairing. Smoked or raw oysters are a traditional accompaniment, but other shellfish serve equally well. For vegetarian dishes that stand up to Stout, try lentil stew, marinated eggplant, or smoked tempeh. Stout also makes a delightful dessert beer when matched with creamy tiramisu or toasted almond biscotti. Available year round. |
SIERRA NEVADA TORPEDO ALEABV: 6.8% |
An American style IPA, dry-hopped with a blend of Cascade and Centennial hops. This Ale presents with a rich, creamy head, wonderful bold aroma and satisfyingly smooth finish. This superbly aromatic IPA wants something big to test it's mettle: try Cuban, or Tex-Mex, or maybe Szechuan. Available year round. |
Sierra Nevada Harvest Southern HemisphereABV: 6.7% |
Like the Celebration Ale, the fresh hops in this beer are dried right after being picked then shipped immediately to Chico for brewing so that they retain their peak aromatics and flavors. To ensure the freshest hops possible, these hops were flown from New Zealand to Chico so they could be brewed one week after they were picked. This marks the first time in known history that a fresh hop ale has been available in America in the spring since hops are harvested in the fall in the northern hemisphere. Limited release. |
Sierra Nevada Harvest Northern Hemisphere Wet Hop AleABV: 6.7% |
The cornerstone of Sierra Nevada’s Harvest series is the beer that started the modern-day fresh hop ale phenomenon in America, their original Harvest Ale. Created in 1996, Harvest Ale features Cascade and Centennial hops from the Yakima Valley in Eastern Washington. Harvest Ale was the first beer ever brewed with 100% fresh picked “wet” hops. These hops are harvested and shipped as “wet” un-dried hops—the same day they are picked—to the brewery in Chico, California where the brewers eagerly wait to get them into the brew kettle while their oils and resins are still at their peak. This extraordinary effort creates a beer with unmatched aromatics of pine and citrus with layers of spicy, sweet notes that hop fanatic’s dream of all year! |
Sierra Nevada Estate Harvest AleABV: 6.7% |
Sierra Nevada wanted to see if they could grow hops at their brewery in Chico, California so they planted their own hop field selecting their prized Cascade and Centennial varieties along with some specialty hop varieties to experiment with. To their surprise, they not only could grow hops, they were also able to harvest them in late summer due to Chico’s ideal climate. Estate Harvest Ale is one of the very few estate harvest ales produced anywhere in the world today. All the hops in the beer are grown naturally on the premises of their brewery in Chico. They pick the hops themselves and then take them directly to the brew kettle, without being dried, just after picking so they retain nearly all of their natural oils and resins. It is made with Cascade, Centennial and Chinook hops. |
Sierra Nevada Kellerweis HefeweizenABV: 4.8% |
This Bavarian-style beer is stylistically, a bit of departure for the brewery, best known for their liberal use of hops and bold American brewing. While the beer is an exception to that rule, it is no less exceptional. Kellerweis, available year-round, is a new take on an old idea. German-style wheat beers are flavorful and refreshing, typically low in alcohol and amazingly drinkable. Kellerweis may have a low ABV, but it’s no shrinking violet in the flavor department. The hazy golden gem is packed with flavor; poised and ready for perfect summertime drinking. Embrace the Haze. Kellerweis is beer in its most natural state: no filtration, pasteurization, or pretention. |
