Coopers Brewery
Coopers Brewery is Australia’s only remaining family-owned brewery. It was established by Thomas Cooper in the new colony of South Australia in 1862. The colony was only 26 years old at that time and its fledgling brewing industry was a difficult one in which to survive, with a number of large, highly competitive breweries already established. But Thomas Cooper’s brewery flourished on his skills as a brewer and he delivered by horse and cart direct to the homes of his customers, a Coopers tradition which survived until the 1920’s. By the turn of the century Coopers Brewery Limited was regarded even by its competitors as a brewery of distinction. Through the difficulties of the Great Depression of the 1930s and the turmoil of two world wars, successive generations of the Cooper family continued to brew fine ales, beers and stouts the natural, traditional way. Coopers products are now marketed nationally and internationally. Thomas Cooper’s great grandson, Bill, is Managing Director. Maxwell Cooper is Chairman and three fifth-generation Cooper sons, Glenn, James and Tim, are the other family directors of the brewery, which is situated in the leafy Adelaide suburb of Leabrook, where Thomas moved to from Norwood in 1881.
