Port Brewing / Lost Abbey
In 1992, there weren’t many options when it came to locally crafted, freshly brewed beers produced in San Diego. As such, Vince and Gina Marsaglia started brewing at home. Soon, they were making more than they could leisurely drink. Yet, they really wanted to share some of the incredible brews they created with their customers too. So, in October of 1992, a 7 barrel brewery was installed and in 1993 the first handcrafted beer brewed on the premises in Solana Beach was served. "For Sinners and Saints alike," signals the creation of a line of newly branded beers from The Lost Abbey Brewery. These inspired beers will be made by Port Brewing Co. at their brewing facility in San Marcos, CA. Rooted in the Monastic and artistic Belgian brewing traditions, The Lost Abbey brewery project is the brainchild of Vince and Gina Marsaglia, former head brewer of Pizza Port in Solana Beach Tomme Arthur and Jim Comstock of Comstock and Associates who formed the partnership responsible for the stewardship of these beers.
Lost Abbey Lost and FoundABV: 7.5% |
Modeled after the great Trappist and monastic ales, Lost and Found is a deep garnet colored beer created from a blend of two row, wheat, Medium and Dark English Crystal, Special B, Chocolate malts, German Magnus and German Tettnang hops, plus a special raisin puree. Lost and Found is brewed with a proprietary Belgian ale yeast strain. |
Lost Abbey
|
This beer wants to remain unclassified. "Some might want to label this as a beer brewed in the Biere de Garde tradition of Northern France," says the brewery. "We would prefer to say it was brewed in the Avant Garde style of beers that will reward all those who seek the not so ordinary." Either way, it's a golden brew with bready notes, made with Two Row, Honey Malt and Port Custom Toast ("we make it ourselves in our pizza ovens") and German Brewer’s Gold, Strissespalt Spalt and Czech Saaz hops. |
Lost Abbey Old ViscosityABV: 10% |
Old Viscosity pours a dark brown color with a creamy tan head. Aromas of chocolate, raisin, brown sugar and malt are fulfilled by a bold, brash flavor in which notes of chocolate and coffee are dominant. Hops make their presence known in the finish, which is long and satisfying. |
Lost Abbey Red Barn AleABV: 6.7% |
A farmhouse ale which traces its roots to the small rustic breweries of Southern Belgium, Red Barn is lightly spiced with organic ginger, orange peels, black pepper and “Grains of Paradise.” It is brewed with Belgian saison yeast, two row, flaked wheat and flaked oat malts, Phoenix and German Tettnang hops. |
Lost Abbey Judgment DayABV: 10.5% |
Judgment Day is a stronger and more contemplative version of Lost Abbey's Lost and Found Ale. It is brewed with Two Row, Wheat, Medium and Dark English Crystal, Special B and Chocolate malts and with Challenger and East Kent Golding hops. The brewery's Proprietary Belgian ale yeast strain, dextrose and raisins complete the ingredients. |
Lost Abbey Ten CommandmentsABV: 9% |
A Belgian Strong Ale and the brewery's once-a-year Anniversary beer. It is a stronger version of Lost and Found Abbey Ale. Massive in every stretch of the brewing way possible, this is the sort of beer that will remind a beer drinker who considers themselves a saint that even saints stray as sinners from time to time. Save yourselves, it's too late for us. |
Lost Abbey Devotion AleABV: 6.2% |
A Belgian Pale Ale, amber in color and presenting a notable sweet, clean aroma. Devotion Ale is full of hops, has lots of flavor and a near dominant malt presence. You think you know what a great, creative beer tastes like? Ready to take a stand? Here's your Final Exam. |
Lost Abbey Serpent’s StoutABV: 11% |
This is one seriously thick beer! Serpent’s Stout is one of the biggest beers made by The Lost Abby. It has aromas of dark cocoa and freshly brewed coffee with an initially sweet taste from the caramel malt pausing with a roasted middle and fuller bodied smooth finish due to the oats in the beer. Not overly bitter or too sweet, this is a massive stout with tons of malt flavor predominating. |
Port Brewing Midnight Sessions LagerABV: 5.5%
|
An incredibly dark, but satisfying session lager, Midnight Sessions has aromas of dark cocoa and fresh brewed coffee. Medium bodied with a silky, robust mouthfeel, the initial taste is sweet, but finishes with a decidedly roasted and fuller bodied smoothness. Not overly bitter nor sweet, it has a great balance. This is a bold, black lager with tons of interest. |
Lost Abbey InfernoABV: 8.5% |
Though pale yellow-golden in color, the appearance – like the alcohol content – is devilishly deceiving. The Strong Golden Ale has a floral and herbaceous nose of hops and yeast are a welcoming invitation to take a sip; flavors are at once malty-sugary and dry (there’s that complex interplay); some citrus, spiciness, and crisp fruitiness make it a dangerously drinkable quencher, and a great companion for grilled fish, or a shellfish pasta with as much garlic as you like. |
Lost Abbey Witch’s WitABV: 4.8% |
There are tons of esters present in the beer as well as a soft yeast note. This beer has also been spiced with Grapefruit Zest, Orange Peel and Coriander. Almost opaque and milky white from the use of raw wheat you can be tasted from start to finish. A faint toasted note from the additions of Flaked Oats is also present. This is a light bodied beer that finishes with a spicy layer in the end. The overall impression should be an easy to drink refreshing ale. Available in the summer. Lighter fare such as white fish, shell fish and salads are all great pairings. |
Lost Abbey Ne GoeienABV: 5.5% |
There is unmistakable Saison yeast at work here. The initial impression is that of fruit (mostly apples) with some heavy yeast phenol spices as well. The spices are from the pepper family with Black Pepper being most notable. The first sip reveals dry and moderately light bodied beer. The yeast makes its presence felt in the middle of the palate of the beer with heavy spicing that pairs incredible well with the hops used in this beer. Make no mistake; there most assuredly is a heavy hand of hops in this beer, which pair well with spicy dishes ranging from fish tacos to Thai food. |
Lost Abbey Angel’s ShareABV: 10% |
This striking Strong Ale is brewed with copious amounts of Caramel malt to emphasize the vanilla and oak flavors found in freshly emptied bourbon barrels. The beer spends a year in oak before it is packaged for release. The beer is 10.0% ABV and is available in 750 ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations. |
The Lost Abbey Carnevale AleABV: 6.5% |
Brewed to mark the Lenten Season before Easter, Carnevale was designed to be a lighter bodied, digestible ale. There are some malted oat and wheat components at play in this dry hopped, hazy yellow colored, saison ale. Hopped with Amarillo, Carnevale sports a moderately spicy nose with hints of oranges and tangerines and the yeast phenols produce layers of clove and allspice.

The Lost Abbey Gift of the Magi AleABV: 9.5% |
This Christmas ale is brewed as a stronger Biere de Garde. Gift of the Magi is a medium- bodied beer with a nutty, honey-like aroma. The beer starts off with an initial malt sweetness that fades into a firm but subtle hop presence. The lager yeast and cold maturation ensures a crisp, smooth finish. As the beer matures, the Brettanomyces added at bottling, become more pronounced and a drier beer will evolve. This brew is an ideal match for a broad spectrum of foods. It was brewed to pair with seasonal specialty dishes as well many baked goods, chicken and fish. A wonderful accompaniment to your holiday table. |
The Lost Abbey Isabelle Proximus |
This beer is a collaboration between five of America’s best craft brewers – Tomme Arthur of Port Brewing / The Lost Abbey, Adam Avery of Avery Brewing, Sam Calagione of Dogfish Head, Vinnie Cilurzo of Russian River, and RobTod of Allagash – Isabelle was created from a common base beer to which each brewery contributed a yeast strain and barrels for aging. After 16 months in oak, the beers were blended to create the final product. |
Port Brewing
|
First brewed in 2002 to celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the Pizza Port in Solana Beach, California, Hop 15 was to be a celebration of 15 years of "Good Beer Brings Good Cheer," so there are 15 different hop varieties that are added to the beer every 15 minutes. Hop 15 has won two silver medals at the Great American Beer Festival. It is made with Two Row and English Light Crystal malts and 15 Different "don't ask don't tell" hops. |
Port Brewing Wipeout IPAABV: 7%
|
This is a classic West Coast IPA which pours an amber/red color and has a strong, clean citrus and pine aroma with a sharp, hop taste. Somewhat unbalanced, but with refreshing bitterness. A very easy drinking brew. |
Port Brewing Santa’s Little HelperABV: 9.5% |
This one is a seriously naughty but nice brew. Santa’s Little Helper is black as coal, but smooth and sweet. As with all stouts, there is an emphasis on roast and coffee aromatics. Santa’s Little Helper leans more towards dark cocoa and freshly brewed coffee than sweet malt tones. This is an Imperial stout that is not overly bitter or too sweet. Medium bodied with warming notes of malt and alcohol, this seasonal release pairs perfectly with leftover fruit cake. |
Port Brewing High Tide Fresh Hop IPAABV: 6.5% |
Each and every fall, San Diego experiences a coastal occurrence known as the "Super High Tide." There are days when the tide just gets too high and flattens out the surf. The lineups shut down and surfers are left to wait until the High Tide recedes. While waiting for the tides to shift in your favor, might we suggest a High Tide IPA? Brewed only once each year to coincide with the Hop Harvest in Yakima Washington, High Tide IPA is made with 180 lbs of Fresh Hops per batch that are plucked from the vines and sent straight to our brewery. The whole drying and processing stage is skipped which means the hops are ultra fresh and full of flavors we can't normally get. |
Port Brewing Hot Rocks LagerABV: 6.2% |
This a collaborative Stein Lager between Tomme Arthur and Tonya Cornett, Brewmaster of Bend Brewing; rich and sweet, dark and roasty. Made in the German “Stein Bier” Tradistion, this smooth, robust dark lager is brewed with the addition of Glowing Hot Granite to the kettle. The addition of these Hot Rocks results in a vigorous “Super Boil” of sorts. The volcanic boil super caramelizes the sugars in the wort lending toffee, smoky and caramel like flavors to the beer you can’t get from a normal boil. |
Port Brewing Shark AttackABV: 9% |
Is it really safe to paddle out in our waters? It's impossible to know for sure. What we do know is that this is an incredibly distinctive and bold, American double red ale that attacks your taste buds with lethal amounts of hops which are balanced by a boat load of crystal malt. If none of this fazes you, then maybe swimming in the shark filled waters is exactly where you belong. We'll see you in the lineup! |
Port Brewing Panzer Pils Imperial PilsnerABV: 9% |
Panzer Pils is Port Brewing’s late Summer Seasonal release. Brewed to an Imperial 9.0%, they have amplified the hops and malts for a proverbial Blitzkrieg of flavor. The beer is made with Imported Pils malts and a U Boat full of German and Czech Hops including Tettnang, Hallertuaer and Saaz. Much more robust and richer than a traditional pils, Panzer Pils is the perfect beer for watching the sun set from the Turret of your German tank. |
Port Brewing 4th AnniversaryABV: 9.5% |
A massively hopped strong pale ale brewed to celebrate our anniversary each year. Anniversary Ale is light gold to pale orange in color and offers a potent aroma of fresh pine and citrus with some warming alcohols present. The taste is a thick, chewy hop presence only barely contained by balancing malts. The finish is pure hop expression with a moderate warming alcohol sensation. |
