PALM Breweries

PALM Breweries is Belgium’s largest independent brewery and the maker of PALM Ale, Belgium’s top-selling ale. Located in Steenhuffel, Belgium, PALM Breweries has a long tradition of producing award-winning beers and ales. In fact, PALM Ale is the product of just such a tradition, having been born out of a challenge by the Belgian Brewing Guild to brew a Belgian Ale to compete with the newly popular Pilsners and Lagers. PALM Breweries represents a unique dedication to the art and craft of beer-making, even within a country as steeped in beer-making tradition as Belgium. Today, PALM is the only brewery in Belgium to still offer all four fermentation methods (bottom fermentation, top fermentation, mixed fermentation and spontaneous fermentation) within its portfolio.

PALM Ale has long been one of Europe’s top-selling specialty beers and when you taste it, we think you will know why. Made with English hops, French Barley, and Belgian yeast, PALM represents the best of European beer-making traditions. It’s the roasted Champagne Malt which gives PALM its amber color, but without being heavy. PALM is a great alternative to traditional pilsners and lagers for the beer drinker looking for something a little different.

Rodenbach Brewery

The roots of the Rodenbach family tree grow from the banks of the Rhine river in Germany, in the town of Andernach. It was Ferdinand Rodenbach, a young military surgeon in the Austrian army, who first settled in Roeselare, after being held as a prisoner of war in France. He was not a brewer, but his progeny was destined to add a great deal of flavor to a young Belgian nation. Incredibly, it was the blind Alexander Rodenbach who started the brewery and laid the foundations for its success. In 1820, he bought a local brewery, the St. George, and rechristened it Brewery Rodenbach. In 1870, Eugene Rodenbach traveled to England to study British brewing techniques. It was there that he discovered the secrets of acidifying beer by aging it in wood. To popular acclaim, British brewers had been using the technique since at least the 17th century to balance out the bitter flavors of their hoppy ales by blending them with older, sour wood-aged ale. Eugene returned to Belgium with enough knowledge and insight to begin his own experiments. Little did he know that he was laying the foundations for a world classic.

Bright and tart, with hints of ripe berries and oak. No, it’s not a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s the distinctive flavors of Rodenbach Grand Cru, the legendary Flemish sour ale. Within its rich, ruby depths you’ll discover hearty wine-like flavors that match up beautifully with strong-flavored foods, while your tongue rejoices in its refreshing effervescence and tart finish. Now, faced with the age-old question, “Beer or Wine?” you don’t have to decide. Grand Cru is all you’ll need. Grand Cru is excellent with oysters, rich cheeses, red meats, sauces and stews.

Rodenbach Belgian Sour

ABV: 5.1%

Latis Imports

A sour beer, with tastebud-tingling flavors of green apple and red currant. Its tartness comes by blending three parts fresh young ale with one part mature, oak-aged ale. Special yeast and microflora in the aging vessels combine to create its signature sourness. But the taste has just begun – a subtle, perfectly balanced whiff of oak mingles with an earthy aroma to create a sharp, pleasant bouquet you won’t soon forget. This beer is superb with fish, shellfish, mushrooms, pasta and cheeses.

Rodenbach Vintage

Rodenbach, the exceptional Flemish red-brown sour ale of mixed fermentation, takes on a unique character after being matured in handmade oak vats, some over 150 years old. This beer is a result of a two year aging process, resulting in Rodenbach’s finest ale ever produced! Enjoy the un-paralled sweet and sour palette with a complex aftertaste.

Abbey Steenbrugge Brewery

Steenbrugge beer was created at the close of the 19th century to honor St Peter’s Abbey with its own beer, in memory of its founder, the Knight Abbot St Arnold, patron saint of brewers. In 1084, Arnold of Tiegem founded St Peter’s Abbey in thriving West Flanders. Legend tells that Arnold, during working hours, would brew beer with which he then healed ailing builders. Therefore, not only was his beer much sought after; he himself was declared patron saint of Belgian brewers. The brewery today is part of Palm Breweries.
The secret of Steenbrugge Abbey beer is a herbal mixture called gruut which enables the beer holds a unique place amongst all other abbey beers. Every city in Belgium used to have its own beer with its own distinctive character. In Bruges, the character was determined by a herbal mixture the brewers were obliged to purchase from the city’s herbal house, known as the Gruuthuse. Steenbrugge brewers continue this tradition.

ArcobrÄu Brewery

Latis Imports is thrilled to introduce American beer drinkers to Bavarian brewery, Arcobrau.  The brewery has been in the Arco family since 1567 and they are still brewing their beer according to the same secret recipes.  Arcobräu uses a unique brewing process that’s almost unheard of in the industry. The yeast for each batch brewed is only used once and discarded after each brewing. The brewery believes yeast loses it effectiveness over time and further changes character by being weakened with each use. The water used for the Arcobräu portfolio comes from a 10,000-year-old spring water that is certified mineral water. The brewing of the beer is in strict accordance with German purity laws.

ArcobrÄu Zwickl

ABV: 5.2%

Latis Imports

This is a lager of bygone days when beer was enjoyed naturally cloudy and unfiltered.  The name comes from the word “key” and the Zwickl is the key to opening the sampling valve at every beer tank. Traditionally there was only one Zwickl and it was held by the one with greatest authority – the brewmaster. Only the brewmaster could unlock the finest brews, including the unfiltered lager.

Theakston Brewery

Founded in 1827, T&R Theakston is in its fifth generation of family ownership.  The Black Bull Brewery is located in the beautiful English market town of Masham, once known as ‘Paradise Fields’. Theakston’s brewery is one of the oldest continuously used breweries in the UK. Using traditional brewing ingredients and techniques, the brewers at Theakston are still using, brew-by-brew, equipment wanted by the British Museum of Brewing.  Continuing a centuries-old craft, Theakston operates one of the last working
cooperages in the UK and employs the last apprenticed craft cooper in the country.  The company logo, the Seal of the Peculier of Masham, refers to a period in medieval history when the living of Masham was used as payment to the Knights Templar to secure the release from capture by Saladin, of Nigel D’Albini. D’Albini was the son of Roger De Mowbray who was given Masham and the surrounding country by William the Conqueror.  Theakston beers are well-known throughout the UK and are noted for their traditional quality and authenticity.
