Lagunitas Brewing Co.
From their earliest days of striving to make consistently good beer, and instead making beer that ranged from vile, to barely drinkable, to wonderful, to elegant, to questionable-at-best. From being castigated by their West Marin neighbors to finally suffering an 'eviction' by their West Marin septic system. From landing in the welcoming arms of Petaluma, and actually getting the beer into bottles, onto the streets, and into the hands of sympathetic beer geeks, to steadily losing less money each month. From all this and more, Lagunitas Brewing Company is emerging as a battle-tested brewery capable of making great beer out of goat's milk, brambles, and asphalt on the surface of the Moon, if need be.
Lagunitas IPAABV: 5.7% |
An easy drinking IPA that has a dark orange-gold colored body, a long-lasting head and a full-bodied sweet hop aroma. Well carbonated with a sharp hop taste, this IPA surprises with its sharp hop finish. Made with 43 different hops and 65 various malts, this fragrant ale will likely float your boat. |
Lagunitas Czech Style Pilsner |
This pilsner pours a rich golden yellow color with a fluffy head. It is crisp and quite dry with a minimal malt presence and strong herbal hop flavor with a nice bitter finish. |
Lagunitas MaximusABV: 7.5% |
A big double IPA which is reddish-copper in color and pours with minimal head. An enticing, spicy hop aroma fills its promise with a bitter, spicy hop flavor, nicely balanced by a solid malt base. Very drinkable. |
Lagunitas Undercover Investigation Shutdown AleABV: 9.9% |
This big beer was created as a protest by Lagunitas founder Tony Magee after California state alcohol regulators conducted a bust at a brewery party and a subsequently issued a 20-day suspension of its brewing license. "It's big, it's bitter and it's angry. It's unrepentant, and it's unforgiven." Undercover Ale is dark amber in color, has a nose of hops and caramel malt, is clean and nicely carbonated on the palate. Available in spring. |
Lagunitas Brown ShuggaABV: 9.9% |
Brewed with 200 lbs. of brown sugar in each batch. Obviously, the result is a rich and very sweet brew. While there is a noticeable malt background, the sugar permeates every aspect: aroma, flavor, even the liquid texture. A big, interesting beer. Available in winter. |
Lagunitas Cappuccino StoutABV: 7.9% |
Is it beer or espresso? And do you care? This big, malty stout pours rich and black, with a big tan head. The malt character and hints of coffee are evident in the nose and the smooth, sweet flavor carries out the coffee promise with perfection. The strong alcohol component is nicely (or scarily) masked by the roasty, full pleasure of each sip. Available in fall/winter. |
Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball AleABV: 9% |
This is Lagunitas’ New Years release for the seasoned beer folks. A big, brown warmer with several types of crystal malt. Hairy Eyeball is copper in color and pouring with a sweet nose of floral hops and malts, this memorably-named barleywine is full-bodied and creamy. Available in winter. |
Lagunitas GnarlywineABV: 9.7% |
This barleywine smells deliciously sweet, which is somewhat surprising given the genre, but this adds to its complexity. The initial taste is as delightful as the aroma with a fruity, hop balance. This brew definitely packs a bit of a punch. |
Lagunitas Hop StoopidABV: 8.2% |
Hop Stoopid isn't stupid at all, but an enjoyable, well-balanced Imperial IPA which pours a clean copper color with a tan head and lots of grapefruit and lime in the nose. Those flavors are also strong on the palate, balanced by earthy bitterness and a surprising nuttiness at the finish. |
Lagunitas Lucky 13ABV: 8.3% |
The annual anniversary beer from Lagunitas, Lucky 13 is a big, red, hoppy ale this year and it sure lives up to its name. This is quite a nice beer, with a well balanced combination of citrusy hops, yeasty fruitiness, and semi-sweet caramel malts, plus an alcohol kick that is welcome but not so strong as to limit drinkability. Available in summer. |
Lagunitas Dogtown Pale Ale |
A genuinely handmade ale. A lot of hard work and enthusiasm go into every aspect of brewing this Mondo Ultra Mega Super Premium Ale. From building the brewery itself to putting the cap on each and every bottle, virtually every step was done by hand. A great balance of malt and hops; hints of crystal roast malt comes through in the hoppy bouquet and on the tasted buds; then finishes nicely with a lively bitterness. |
Lagunitas A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ABV: 7.7% |
A Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’is a Wheatie Nor-Cal Ale. Way smooth and silky with a nice wheaty-esq-ish-ness. As an American pale wheat ale the taste is much like a hoppy wheat beer, just what you’d expect and at 7.7% it doesn’t have that much of an alcohol bite. Also of note, the aftertaste is a very unique sweet bitterness, very nice. The mouthfeel is excellent; there are some lingering pear and green apple notes that hang around for a while on the inside of your mouth. Just a little sumpin' sumpin’ we all need to kick summer into full swing! |
Lagunitas Little Sumpin’ WildABV: 7.8% |
The big sister of Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ Ale, Little Sumpin’ Wild is brewed with lots of wheat for a curious malt complexity. Fermented with Lagunitas’ Belgian yeast strain, this is a beer that is huge in flavor and satisfaction. |
Lagunitas Wilco Tango FoxtrotABV: 7.83% |
Lagunitas’ newest seasonal brew is a big ol’ Imperial brown ale to help with your slippery slide into springtime. This limited release is described as a malty, robust jobless recovery ale by the folks at Lagunitas. Rich, smooth, dangerous and chocolaty, WTF is available in March. |
