On-premise Spotlight: Moriarty's"Stay fresh, stay clean, stay new." This is the philosophy that local bar owner, John Ferry lives by: businesses must constantly reinvest in their establishments. Regular improvements and renovations appeal to potential customers and loyal patrons alike. Ferry, owner of Moriarty’s Restaurant and Bar located at 1116 Walnut Street, lives by these words. It’s one reason why he has been so successful in his 34 years of ownership. "I have customers who have been devoted to Moriarty's for over 20 years. They’re comfortable here. That's why they come back." Aside from the many renovations that have kept Moriarty’s fresh for all these years, the building is 178 years old, many things have remained constant and have kept customers comfortable in their seats. A mix of old time authenticity, newness and exceptional customer service and cleanliness are a few examples. Moriarty's has had its share of renovations throughout its history that were necessary to keep its appeal to the public, but Ferry has managed to keep alive the same authenticity that originally brought people through the doors. The bar, on the first floor, is original. As the area began to see new bars emerge, he felt the need to expand. He opened the second and third floors, which now serve as a mini-pub and banquet facility. He had artisans remodel the front of the restaurant and give it a new look as well as Irish carpenters who renovated the whole second floor. Most recently, new windows were installed on the first floor that open up to the sidewalk and outside dining area. Ferry's changes always honor the building’s history. "Many tourists come to Philly looking for a good local bar,” said Ferry. They can definitely find that at Moriarty's where the walls are covered with vintage memorabilia of the city. |

Ferry added that many people often make him offers to purchase these collectible items. He also has a customer who brings in items from time to time, adding to his collection. Moriarty's first floor focal point is a 65 foot mahogany bar and the dramatic back bar made from an antique armoire that had blue mirrors. Much of the armoire remained, but new and brighter mirrors were installed. The restaurant also maintains 13 of the original 15 fireplaces that remain. All were raised off the ground and put above table level so everyone may enjoy them. Ferry feels that his customers (a mix of an older inner city crowd, young college students and senior citizens) come back because of the atmosphere along with the variety of beer he offers that keep Moriarty's a truly genuine Philadelphia restaurant and tavern.

The restaurant is known for its award-winning international cuisine, and its large beer selection, which consists of an assortment of 50 bottles and 30 different draughts — many are often carried per customer requests. Ferry takes pride in offering customers choices and having enough to keep everyone happy. "If Baskin Robbins can have 31 flavors, why can't we have 30 different beers?" Moriarty's is under construction once again. The front of the building will receive wood paneling, new paint and shutters. These changes and redesigned floor will be done by mid-summer. John Ferry knows how to keep up appearances and deliver a first-class experience to his customers and his winning formula guarantees him continued success for many years to come.
