World Beer Cup 2008
The seventh bi-annual
"Olympics of Beer"
event, The World Beer
Cup, was held in San
Diego, California this
April. "Brewers from
all over the world participate
in this event in
order to win recognition
for creativity and
brewing ability", says
Charlie Papazian,
President of the Brewers
Association. "For a
brewer, a World Beer
Cup gold medal
allows them to say
that their winning
beer represents the
best example of that
beer style in the world."
This year, 644 breweries
from 58 countries
competed for
various awards. 2,864
beers entered in 91
beer style categories and
blind tasting evaluations were conducted
by judges from 21 different
countries.
Brewery Recognitions were given to
Blue Moon Brewing Company for the
2008 World Beer Cup Champion
Brewery in the Large Brewing
Company Category and Port Brewing
Company was recognized as the Small
Brewing Co. champion! For a full list
of winners in all the beer style categories
go to www. worldbeercup.org.
"Evaluating beer happens on many
levels. On a professional level, beer
evaluation is a form of peer review.
The results are public, so consumers
can learn what beers meet a high
level of quality and what beers exemplify
certain styles as interpreted by
the judges. When industry professionals
acknowledge the excellence in
products from around the market, the
consumer can be sure that those
products are the finest available."
