All About the Beers Since 1888, Saranac Craft Brewers Balance Flavor with Tradition

An independent, family-owned craft brewery, F. X. Matt is located near New York’s Adirondack Mountains where the soft water is perfect for brewing their elegant, all-malt beers. Allowing their beers to speak for themselves, the Matt's had eschewed the spotlight and awards sought by many brewers. But, they have recently had a change of heart and Saranac Pale Ale won a silver medal at the World Beer Cup (no gold was awarded) and another silver at the Australian International Beer Awards. “Distinctive but Drinkable Beers" is their motto and that claim is backed up by these prestigious awards. Another departure for F.X. Matt is the addition of big beers to their High Peaks series. High Peaks Imperial Stout took home the bronze from Australia.

"We don't brew extreme beer, but High Peaks is an exception and we did it to prove a point," began Fred Matt, Vice President of Sales and Marketing and fourth generation brewer of F. X. Matt & Sons. Nick Matt, Fred's uncle and President of the brewery, who guided the successful development of the Saranac family of brands, eagerly chimed in. "Saranac has stayed true to the brewing heritage of our founder

F. X. Matt. He left Germany for America in 1878 after honing his brewing skills under the Duke of Baden. When he opened the brewery 120 years ago in Utica, New York, he continued the German tradition of brewing flavorful, very drinkable beers. If you're a beer drinker, you want to drink more than one. High Peaks was a departure, but it showed the world that we can brew big beers with the best of them."

Drinkable, yet distinctive beers are the hallmarks of Saranac beers. Saranac Pomegranate Wheat is a perfect example. While some fruit beers tend to be on the sweeter side, the crisp, clean character of this beer is not overwhelmed by the addition of pomegranate. As the old saying goes, Pomegranate Wheat is the beer to have when you’re having more than one. It remains a refreshing wheat beer that is sold at a reasonable price point. Fred Matt explains, "Our company prides itself as a purveyor of fine beers offered to the customer at a fair price. Saranac's beers are brewed with the finest ingredients from around the world proving that high quality, drinkable craft beers can be a good value, too. That has been the essence of our brewing tradition since 1888.”
