Great Lakes Brewing Co.
From its earliest beginnings, Great Lakes Brewing Company made an unwavering commitment to offer customers the most flavorful, freshest beer in the business by settling in a neighborhood that was once the heart of Cleveland's brewing industry. Established in 1988 by brothers Patrick and Daniel Conway, Great Lakes Brewing Company became the first microbrewery in the state of Ohio and today remains Ohio's most celebrated and award-winning brewer of lagers and ales.
"From the beginning, we incorporated the techniques of brewing used by European brewers in our own craft brewing process," explains co-owner Patrick Conway. "We were determined to use only the freshest ingredients with no preservatives or chemicals. We also refused to succumb to pasteurization, which ultimately compromises flavor."
The first brew, a Dortmunder-style beer originally called The Heisman (named for the famed football player who lived around the corner from Great Lakes Brewing Company) was an overnight success. The flagship brew was eventually renamed Dortmunder Gold and was joined by their other award-winning brews.
Great Lakes Brewing Company is an environmentally respectful and socially conscious company committed to crafting fresh, flavorful, high-quality beer for the enjoyment of their customers. Great Lakes aspires to maintain their status as the premier craft brewery in the Great Lakes region.
Great Lakes Dortmunder GoldABV: 5.8% |
This is a smooth lager that strikes a delicate balance between sweet malt and dry hop flavors. During the mid-19th century, seven breweries within the city of Dortmund, Germany began brewing beers in the same manner, resulting in what has come to be known as the "Dortmunder" style. It is a perfect beer for salads, fish and chicken. |
Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald PorterABV: 4.7% |
Named after the ship that frequently docked in Cleveland and sunk in Lake Superior on November 10, 1975 with many Northeast Ohioans on board, this is a complex, roasty porter with a bittersweet, chocolate-coffee taste and bold hop presence. This porter pairs well with roasty and smoked flavors like barbecued ribs, steaks and oysters. It is also a favorite with chocolate desserts. |
Great Lakes Eliot Ness Amber LagerABV: 6.2% |
This brew is named after one of Cleveland's most respected safety directors who frequented the Brewpub's bar during his tenure from 1935-1941 and, according to popular legend, was responsible for the bullet holes in the bar still evident today. This amber lager is rich with fragrant malt flavors balanced by crisp, noble hops. This beer compliments spicy dishes, pork, pasta and sausage perfectly. |
Great Lakes Burning River Pale AleABV: 4.8% |
Named after the infamous 1969 burning of the Cuyahoga River, Burning River Pale Ale is an assertively hopped American pale ale with citrusy and piney Cascade hops. Try this one with big, robust flavors like red meats and strong cheeses. |
Great Lakes Commodore Perry IPAABV: 6.4% |
This monumental India Pale Ale honors the hero from The War of 1812 who battled the enemy on Lake Erie. It is a medium-bodied and well hopped India Pale Ale with a dry, fruity aftertaste. This brew brings out the best of red meats and strong cheeses. |
Great Lakes Conway’s Irish AleABV: 5.4% |
Conway’s Irish Ale is a malty Irish Ale with a notable toasty flavor derived from lightly roasted malt. Second to dry stout, this style of ale is Ireland's other most distinctive brew. This brew is named after Patrick Conway, the grandfather of co-owners Patrick and Daniel Conway and a Cleveland policeman who directed traffic for 25 years near the brewery. Irish Ale is a "meat and potatoes" type of beer. It goes well with corned beef, shepherd's pie, stews and other traditional Irish fare. |
Great Lakes Blackout StoutABV: 7.2% |
This is a Russian Imperial Stout with a hearty malt body and bold hop flavor. The Imperial Stout style originated from recipes that British brewers tailored for the czars and czarinas of the Russian Imperial court. Named after the infamous "Blackout of 2003" that left the northeastern United States in complete darkness, but resulted in old-fashioned neighborhood porch parties and down-home fun, Blackout Stout compliments grilled red meats and chocolate desserts perfectly. |
Great Lakes Holy Moses White AleABV: 5.4% |
Known for its crisp and clean taste, spiced with orange peel, chamomile and coriander, this truly is a unique brew. Much like a certain city and its founder; Moses Cleveland. This spiced Belgian Wit Ale pairs perfectly with seafood, salad and egg dishes. |
Great Lakes Lake Erie MonsterABV: 9.1% |
An unfiltered Imperial India Pale Ale with huge hop flavor, Lake Erie Monster is a hazy colored Imperial IPA. While still relatively new, this is one of the fastest growing styles in the craft beer industry, and a favorite among “hopheads”. A beer this distinctively hoppy inspires many a tall tale. And they don’t come taller than Bessie, the legendary monster that roams the shallow depths of Lake Erie. Try this deliciously strong, hoppy beer with steak, pork chops, aged cheese and dark chocolate. |
Great Lakes OktoberfestABV: 6.5% |
This beer is a nod to Cleveland’s commemoration of the traditional German Oktoberfest, which dates back to the mid 1800’s when German immigrants celebrated at outdoor beer gardens like Haltnorth’s Garden and Kindvater’s St. Clair Garden. This amber lager, with rich malt flavor, is balanced by fragrant noble hops, making it the perfect compliment to spicy dishes, pork, pasta and sausage. |
Great Lakes Christmas AleABV: 7.5% |
From crowded stores to grating family get-togethers, it’s still a time to be thankful. Especially for a festive holiday ale that will make you wish the holidays would last just a bit longer. Brewed with honey and spiced with fresh ginger and cinnamon, Great Lakes Christmas Ale is a perfect complement to all holiday fare, toasts and cheers. ABV: 7.5% |
Great Lakes New Taster Pack |
A 12 pack featuring Great Lake’s varietal family of beers including Dortmunder Gold Lager, Eliot Ness Amber Lager, Burning River Pale Ale and Edmund Fitzgerald Porter. Formerly called “The Sampler”, the new “Taster’s Pack” also educates the consumer on how to benefit from a well-rounded beer tasting experience (simple beer tasting instructions are included on the top panels of the package). It’s not just a sample pack, it’s a beer tasting experience. |
Great Lakes DopplerockABV: 7.8% |
“Rock and Roll” may have been coined in Cleveland, but the influence of this genre reaches far beyond the shores of Lake Erie. Great Lakes Doppelrock bears witness to everything double: double bock flavor, dueling rockers and the double neck guitar made famous by many rock legends. Round and malty balance, this beer pairs perfectly with pot roast, hearty beef stew and earthy cheeses. |
Great Lakes NosferatuABV: 8% |
Like vampires (especially the notorious German vampire from the 1920’s film era), this beer has a bit of a reputation as the “beer with the bite.” This highly hopped Imperial red ale is rich with flavor, yet remarkably balanced. Nosferatu tastes great with root vegetables, red meats and soft cheeses. |
