Augustiner Brewery

www.augustiner-braeu.de/augustiner.html

Augustiner is the oldest brewery in the Munich region, tracing back to the early 1300s. The Augustiner Keller, home of the smooth, savory and slightly sweet Augustiner beer, is not far from Hofbräuhaus. Originally an Augustinian monastery dating back to 1294, it first began brewing beer in 1328. Augustiner beers had already become famous by the early 1550s when Martin Luther used to stop for a pint when he was in the area to preach.  Eventually, the brewery was moved to its present location on Neuhauserstrasse in the center of Munich where it remains a must stop for beer-loving visitors to the city.

This German brew has a beautiful bright gold color and a clean, very light aroma with a slightly off-dry malt flavor and delicate hop background.  It has a clean light malt and hop finish with a long, mild, dry hop aftertaste. Munich beer drinkers love Augustiner's malty lagers and this Helles lager is a particular favorite. Augustiner labels this export version a "light beer," but rest assured that term refers to its color and not its body. It is a classic German lager, full-bodied and satisfying; very smooth and tasty.

This is a deep russet-brown beer with a fluffy amber head. The nose is a display of variations on sugar -- butterscotch, caramel, treacle and molasses. Hops take a back seat on the palate, while sweet malts and dark sugar flavors play through the center. There's just enough bitterness to keep it from cloying. It's strayed a long way from its European roots, but it has character. Try it with a spicy pork dish
