E&J Gallo
After the repeal of prohibition in 1933, when the sale of alcohol was again legal in the US, brothers Ernest and Julio founded their winery in California’s Central Valley, renting a warehouse and buying crushing and fermentation equipment on credit. They contracted grapes from local growers, promising them payment after the wine was sold. For more than seven decades, E. & J. Gallo has built its reputation as the world leader in the art and science of winemaking, wine grape growing, and the marketing and distribution of wines worldwide. With state-of-the-art wineries located throughout California, Gallo is supplied by vineyards in all of the state’s premier growing regions.
