The monks of Corsendonk Abbey in Oud-Turnhout started a brewery in 1400, which flourished until 1784 when the abbey was closed by Austrian ruler Jozef II. In 1906, Antonius Keersmaekers founded a secular brewery to revive the monks’ brewing traditions. His award winning beers included Pater Noster (Our Father), a full-bodied, high fermentation brew of exquisite palate. Antonius’ grandson Jef now continues the family tradition of brewing this award-winning abbey ale, as well as Agnus Dei (Lamb of God), a pale, light-bodied brew of delicate palate, under license from the current owners of the abbey, who have transformed it into an international conference center.

Corsendonk Abbey Brown Ale (Pater Noster)

Corsendonk

This brew is known in Belgium simply as “Pater”. Described by Michael Jackson as “a strong, Burgundy-colored ale in the style of the classic Trappist brews of Belgium with a very distinctive bouquet: yeasty, fruity and slightly smoky. In palate, it has notes of port, raisins and black chocolate. Abbey Brown Matures greatly with age, becoming softer, smoother and deeper in palate.” Who are we to argue?

Corsendonk Abbey Pale Ale (Agnus Dei)

Corsendonk

Known in Belgium as “Agnus,” Corsendonk Abbey pale Ale is described by Michael Jackson as “dry, with a great deal of finesse." This is a big, potent ale in the triple category. It opens with a dry, lightly citric fruitiness on the palate and finishes with a distinctive hop character. Abbey Pale will mature in the bottle up to three years, becoming drier and developing a Brut Champagne-like character.

Corsendonk Christmas Ale

Corsendonk

First brewed and released in 1998, Corsendonk Christmas Ale is a rich, dark, joyous brew with which to celebrate the holiday season. Its aroma of chocolate malt and spices is reminiscent of the wonderful smells of holiday baking in Mom’s kitchen. On the palate this silky smooth ale is predominantly malty, with smoky, spicy and citrusy notes and a long, lingering finish that is lightly tart and malty. Round and well-balanced, it will be a welcome addition to holiday tables and parties.
