21st Amendment Brewery

In 2000, Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan founded the 21st Amendment Brewery, one of California’s few canning craft breweries, in San Francisco’s historic South Park neighborhood. The popular brewpub is now at the heart of the new city center, just south of the financial district and only two blocks from the San Francisco Giants baseball park..

Freccia and O’Sullivan met in early 1995 in San Francisco. Both had just moved from southern California to the Bay area when they heard the calling of beer. O’Sullivan, a former photographer and paralegal, “traded his suits for boots and was saved by beer”. He moved to Berkeley and took a job as assistant brewer at the Triple Rock Brewery there. Freccia, a writer, actor and, by extension, restaurant professional, was also an avid homebrewer. Frustrated with the lack of beer culture in the L.A. area, he moved to San Francisco and began writing for the Celebrator Beer News, the west’s largest beer publication. Freccia and O’Sullivan met, became friends and, while sitting together in a summer class on brewing science at UC Davis, hatched their plan for what would become the 21st Amendment.

To Nico and Shawn the 21st Amendment means not only the right to brew beer, but to brew it originally. They drink what they can and can what they drink. Their beers are different…daring….and delicious!

21st Amendment Monk’s Blood

ABV: 8.5%

21st Amendment
Brewery

The name “Monk’s Blood” is an homage to the monks of Belgium’s monasteries who have been brewing some of the world’s great beer for centuries. During times of fasting, the monks survive solely on beer, which they refer to as “liquid bread”. Beer, quite literally, is in their blood. The most sublime of the monk’s premium brews is dark like blood, rich and nourishing. Monk’s Blood is a strong, dark Belgian ale that consists of five malts, Belgian Candi sugar, a healthy dose of west coast hops. It is finished with a secret blend of botanicals and spices. The beer will pair beautifully with rich winter stews, creamy cheeses, unctuous desserts, or just by itself, in a brandy snifter, with a good book by the fire.

This new limited release from 21st Amendment Brewery is a Belgian-style golden ale brewed with spices.  Deceivingly strong and spicy, Golden Doom is brewed using imported pilsner malt for a crisp finish, Saaz hops for a spicy nose and special Belgian yeast.  It is then finished with grains of paradise for a trip through purgatory to an ending in heaven.

Like FDR’s Depression-era radio addresses, which were like a kick in the butt and a hug at the same time, 21st Amendment’s Fireside Chat is a subtle twist on the traditional seasonal brew. The brewers begin with a rich, dark, English-style ale, then they improvise with spices until they know they have a beer worth sharing with the nation. Brewed like a classic, Fireside Chat is a Strong Ale with a subtle blend of spices for just the right warming festive flair.
